L-3 Communications has landed an initial contract from General Dynamics‘s Bath Iron Works subsidiary to provide eight integrated electrical system units for the U.S. Navy‘s destroyer ships.
L-3 will install the company’s Power Node Control Center on DDG 51 units to support simultaneous transfer switch, frequency converter, circuit breaker, power conditioner, power transformer and motor controller functions, the company said Thursday.
“We see great opportunity to expand PNCC applications across other U.S. Navy platforms, including aircraft carriers, amphibious assault ships and littoral ships where power load manageability is vital,” said Steve Kantor, president of L-3 Electronic Systems.
L-3 SPD Electrical Systems developed PNCC — which was designed to address lightweighting and space-efficiency capabilities — through internal research and development efforts, L-3 said.
The company added that delivery orders for the contract from General Dynamics Bath Iron Works are in process and delivery of the first production units are expected in December 2017.
