Boeing‘s Insitu subsidiary has flown its ScanEagle unmanned aerial vehicle in the Arctic region as part of search-and-rescue demonstrations before the U.S. Coast Guard, Federal Aviation Administration, Energy Department and other industry participants.
Insitu said Thursday the Coast Guard Research and Development Center’s Arctic Technology Evaluation 2015 Search and Rescue exercise aims to assess the capability of unmanned technologies to support search-and-rescue operations in remote areas.
“The lessons learned from this joint exercise will help facilitate response efforts in the future as well as develop requirements, tactics, techniques and procedures for unmanned technologies that could be leveraged for those responses in the Arctic environment,” said Rich Hansen, Arctic coordinator for Coast Guard RDC.
According to Insitu, the exercise also serves as a simulation of collaborative efforts between government and industry in response to offshore emergency situations.
ScanEagle performed beyond-line-of-sight, overwatch and imaging functions.
