budget stock photoDeltek‘s Alex Rossino reports that the state of cloud spending at the Department of Homeland Security is unclear amid inconsistencies between verifiable spending data and data reported to the Office of Management and Budget.

Rossino wrote in an blog entry posted Tuesday that while he was able to verify $22.31 million spent on cloud computing for fiscal year 2015, DHS reported $479.43 million to OMB.

He noted the discrepancy could be due to the department’s use of existing large IT support contracts for internal cloud efforts and generalized or overlapping terms used to report spending data.

Rossino says inaccuracies and inconsistencies in government data hinder investment audit efforts, reduce the data’s value to the contracting community and distort knowledge of the federal market’s state.

“Until these discrepancies are cleared up, we may never have a clear understanding what the adoption status, pace, or addressable contract value of cloud computing by federal agencies actually is,” he said.
