A new coalition has been established to promote the implementation of best practices in space safety in line with international standards.
The Space Safety Coalition serves as a group of space operators and industry stakeholders that will continually update a set of safety guidelines to include discoveries from orbital debris assessments and other emerging matters in space governance, the group said Wednesday.
Endorsed by entities like Inmarsat, Iridium and Maxar Technologies the SSC Best Practices document aims to establish long-term sustainability recommendations to help industry improve the design and operation of space assets.
According to the coalition, the guidelines will apply to all spacecraft and address existing standards created by organizations such as the U.N. Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, International Organization for Standardization and Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee.
SSC’s establishment was announced during the Advanced Maui Optical and Space Surveillance Technologies Conference in Hawaii.
