Lockheed Martin has donated $3M to the University of Maryland’s A. James Clark School of Engineering for research projects on vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.
The university’s rotorcraft laboratory and hypersonic wind tunnel will serve as locations for experiments on VTOL and high-speed flight up to Mach 8, the company said Wednesday.
In addition, the funds support efforts to boost the number of enrollees from underrepresented communities in science, technology, engineering and math courses.
The donation adds to Lockheed’s existing $19M of contributions to the University of Maryland since 2010. The company also sponsored scholarships of nine computer science students at the university earlier this year with up to $40K of funds in total.
“We expect to hire 50K STEM professionals over the next decade, and together we will inspire the next generation of engineers to join us in creating breathtaking generation-after-next technology,†said Keoki Jackson, chief technology officer at Lockheed Martin.
