Leonardo DRS has completed a test flight for its missile-warning and countermeasures system, which is designed to defend fixed-wing as well as transport and surveillance aircraft against airborne threats.
The Multiple Aperture Infra-Red system was installed on a testbed helicopter and recorded data from various infrared cameras simultaneously throughout the flight along the Italian coast, Leonardo said Tuesday.
MAIR’s infrared sensors generate data for hostile fire indication, spherical missile warning, imaging and search and track functions. The platform-agnostic system differentiates missiles from other heat sources and deploys the Leonardo-built Miysis Directed Infra-Red CounterMeasure system to respond to threats.
Leonardo previously delivered the Skyward-G and PIRATE infrared search and track systems for use by Saab Gripen E and Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, respectively.
The Arlington, Va.-based firm first introduced MAIR during the Paris Air Show in June.
