Dewberry and Shirley Contracting Company have begun an effort to modify the Route 7 highway in Fairfax, Va., under a contract with the state’s transportation department. The companies will work to reconstruct and widen the road with new multimodal, intersectional and water management infrastructures between Reston Avenue and Jarrett Valley Drive, Dewberry said Tuesday.
In addition, the effort will increase the number of lanes from four to six, build shared-use paths for cyclists and pedestrians, provide a new underpass and add new stormwater management ponds.
“This is a heavily traveled commuter corridor and the maintenance of traffic throughout construction is critical to the success of this project,†says Steve Kuntz, manager of Dewberry’s mid-Atlantic region transportation service line.
Work under the project will continue through August 2024. Virginia Department of Transportation awarded the project’s $252M contract in July 2018.
