Report: Public Sector Remains at Risk of Cyberattacks Amid Tech Adoption - top government contractors - best government contracting event

Tenable has released a new global study highlighting the areas public sector cybersecurity leaders must prioritize in 2019 to protect their networks amid the changing cyber threats.

The study, conducted by Ponemon Institute, calls on officials to address the continued cyber attacks targeting the public sector, to secure internet of things devices and operational technologies and to look at the increased visibility of systems to hackers, the business risks and network vulnerabilities, Tenable said Monday.

Ponemon researchers interviewed 244 public sector professionals across four continents about their current cybersecurity operations.

The study shows that 88 percent of public sector organizations around the world have already suffered at least one damaging cyberattack over the past two years. The trend is expected to continue in 2019 and in the coming years.

The growing adoption of IoT and OT tools also increases the vulnerabilities of public sector networks as well as attack surface that could lead to catastrophic effects of a loss of critical IoT or OT services, the study suggests.Â

To guard against damaging cyber attacks in the future, the study calls on cyber officials to boost efforts to reduce vulnerabilities and to stay ahead of adversaries.
