Tollie Strode Jr., a senior project officer at Science Applications International Corp., will be honored at the Black Engineer of the Year Award Conference for his engineering expertise and accomplishments at the Chantilly, Va.-based company.

He will receive the Gen. Lester L. Lyles Legacy award during the BEYA event that will take place on Feb. 9 in Washington, D.C., SAIC said Monday.

Strode has led a team experimenting with robotic autonomous systems in support of the Department of Defense’s efforts to build platforms that could increase the performance of deployed military personnel. He currently supports engineering of ground robotic systems, soldier-borne sensors and drones for potential use in the battlefield.

Before joining SAIC in 2009, he worked for the private sector in various roles such as a manufacturing management position at Procter and Gamble.

He joined the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant after graduating from the U.S. Military Academy and supported military robotic programs at Fort Benning in Georgia.
