Paul Lemmo, vice president of integrated warfare systems and sensors at Lockheed Martin, has said the preliminary design review for High-Energy Laser and Integrated Optical-Dazzler with Surveillance system is set to occur in fiscal year 2019, National Defense reported Tuesday.
Lockheed plans to deliver two HELIOS platforms to the U.S. Navy by FY 2020 for integration with the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer and installation at a ground-based testing site as part of a potential $942.8M contract awarded in January 2018.
"HELIOS and the fundamental laser weapon design in there is a product of our investment, that's what we did," Lemmo said Tuesday during a media briefing at the Surface Navy Association's annual symposium.
"It's a known design and so there's a lot of elements to the system that are mature and that we can move on with."
The HELIOS program aims to deploy an integrated laser weapon system designed to counter hostile drones and support battle damage assessment and combat identification operations, the report noted.
