The U.S. Marine Corps has selected Raytheon to provide updated radar systems for integration into the service branch’s fleet of F/A-18C/D Hornet jets.

Raytheon said Tuesday it will commence the delivery of APG-79(v)4 active electronically scanned array radars in 2020 and continue through 2022.

The latest AESA technology shares a more than 90 percent commonality with its predecessor APG-79 system and works to support air-to-surface at maritime strike operations.

"Now that the APG-79(v)4 is slated to fly on the classic Hornet, Marine Corps pilots will be able to identify, track and engage more targets over a greater distance than ever before,” said Eric Ditmars, vice president of Raytheon’s secure sensor solutions business.

The company designed the radar to reduce time allocated for maintenance work and increase flight availability for aircrews.
