General Atomics‘ electromagnetic systems business has received a contract to develop and provide a battery system that would power propulsion units of the U.S. Special Operations Command’s underwater vehicles.
The company said Monday it will work to develop Lithium-Ion Fault Tolerant prototype batteries for integration and testing with these vehicles that work to transport USSOCOM payloads undersea.
LiFT technology is designed to endure single-cell faults and prevent failure of lithium-ion cells, having been tested and used with other undersea mobility vehicles.
Rolf Ziesing, vice president of programs at General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems, said the company is working with customers to demonstrate and verify the LiFT battery systems for use with naval vessels.
