Triad National Security has received a notice to proceed from the Energy Department’s National Nuclear Security Administration to begin transition efforts for the management and operation of the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico.
The company said Monday it will officially assume operation and management responsibilities at the national lab on Nov. 1 after the four-month transition phase.
Thomas Mason, senior vice president for global laboratory operations at Battelle, has been named president of Triad and director-designate of LANL in a move that takes effect in November.
Mason, former director of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, will work with LANL’s current director Terry Wallace to streamline the transition phase for the lab.
Robert Webster, a nearly-three decade weapons program veteran at LANL, will serve as deputy director of weapons at the national lab.
John Sarrao, principal associate director for science, technology, and engineering at LANL, has been appointed deputy director of science, technology and engineering.
Kelly Beierschmitt, formerly chief research officer at Idaho National Laboratory, will serve as deputy director of operations at LANL.
Frances Chadwick, a 22-year LANL veteran, will serve as staff director once Triad assumes management responsibilities at the national lab.
The notice came a month after NNSA awarded Triad a potential 10-year, $25 billion contract to run and manage the site.
Triad National Security – a limited liability firm consists of Battelle, Texas A&M University and the University of California – will work with subcontractors Fluor, Huntington Ingalls Industries, TechSource, Longenecker & Associates and Merrick-SMSI to oversee technical facilities, personnel and research programs at LANL.
