Report: Northrop, Raytheon Eye Marine Aircraft Radar Upgrade Contract - top government contractors - best government contracting event

Northrop Grumman and Raytheon intend to separately respond to a solicitation for new active electronically scanned arrays for the U.S. Marine Corps’ fleet of legacy Hornet aircraft, Flightglobal reported Friday.

The service branch issued a request for proposals in early July for advanced AESAs as part of a modernization requirement for 88 Boeing F/A-18C/Ds.

Raytheon seeks to offer its APG-79(V)4 radar, which went through a five-week fit check under the Marine Corps’ request, according to Michael Garcia, the Waltham, Mass.-based firm’s business development director.

Meanwhile, Northrop looks to offer its APG-83 Scalable Agile Beam Radar, the preparation details of which remains confidential.

The Wes Bush-led firm plans to take advantage of the modernization effort to replace the legacy Hornet’s Raytheon-made, mechanically-scanned radar.

The Marine Corps will begin modifying the aircraft in late 2020 through 2022.
