The Defense Department has chosen 11 scientists and engineers to conduct foundational research through the 2018 Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellowship program.
They will join 45 current VBFF members who support studies in areas such as quantum information science, neuroscience, engineered materials, nanoscience, statistics and applied mathematics, DoD said Thursday.
The Basic Research Office at the Pentagon’s Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering sponsors, while the Office of Naval Research provides administrative support.
VBFF is named after Vannevar Bush, who led the U.S. Office of Scientific Research and Development during World War II and inspired DoD to invest on basic research efforts that have resulted to technologies such as stealth applications and the global positioning system.
Fellows gain an opportunity to engage with the department’s research enterprise as well as share ideas with military and civilian officials, DoD researchers and national security science and engineering organizations.
