The State Department has approved Australia’s request to buy M795 155mm high-explosive projectiles from the U.S. government under a potential $148 million foreign military sales transaction.
Australia plans to use the howitzer ammunition to build up homeland defense capability, deter regional threats and meet its operational readiness training needs, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Thursday.
The proposed sale covers 2,504 M795 rounds with Insensitive Munitions Explosive 101 as well as M231 and M232/M232A1 propelling charges, electronic-timed and point detonating fuzes, percussion primers, technical support, program assistance and logistics services.
DSCA said it informed Congress of the proposed transaction Wednesday and that the prime contractor will be announced at a later date.
