A Kraken Robotics subsidiary has produced a synthetic aperture sonar technology designed to map the ocean floor in support of U.S. Navy‘s autonomous minehunting operations.
The service branch integrated and tested Kraken Robotics Systems-made SAS onboard the Naval Warfare Center‘s REMUS 600 autonomous underwater vehicle, the company said Jan. 11.
The sonar is built to collect target data at a range of more than 250 meters during minehunting, marine archaeology, debris mapping and seabed surveying missions.
“The major concern of mine countermeasures is to keep sailors far away from the mine threat while having a high level of confidence in the detection and classification of possible threats,” said Karl Kenny, president and CEO of Kraken
“Real-time SAS signal processing onboard an AUV is a significant step forward from the current approach,” Kenny added.
Kongsberg built the REMUS 600 platform with funds from the Office of Naval Research.
