Surmet has received a $7.9 million U.S. Air Force contract to deliver research and development on the transparent advanced production process used for Aluminum Oxynitride or ALON ceramic.
The Defense Department said Friday services under the small business innovation research contract aim to have ALON’s manufacturing process meet DoD requirements for transparent armor and infrared sensor windows.
The Air Force obligates $1.9 million in fiscal 2017 R&D funds upon awarding.
The company will work in Burlington, Massachusetts, through May 2021.
The Air Force Research Lab sourced the contract competitively and received one entry.
ALONÂ is a transparent ceramic formed from powdered Aluminum Oxynitride.
Aside from being ALON’s sole manufacturer globally, Surmet also offers other compound material products such as Magnesium Aluminate Spinel and SuperSapphire.
