Airbus‘ defense and space business will produce a multi-mode radar platform for integration into the U.S. Coast Guard‘s ninth National Security Cutter as part of a contract awarded to Airbus DS Electronics and Border Security GmbH.
The company said Monday its TRS-3D Baseline D MMR, also called AN/SPS-75, uses gallium nitride technology and offers traditional radar functions as well as other options for future development.
Huntington Ingalls Industries is building the ninth Legend-class National Security Cutter, which will be part of a new line of ships that will replace the Marine Corps’ current fleet of 12 Hamilton-class cutters, under a $486 million contract awarded in early January.
“[TRS-3D Baseline D MMR] is currently meeting operational requirements and is consistent with Coast Guard investments in training infrastructure ashore, as well as with their existing sustainment program,” said Mike Cosentino, president of Airbus’ defense and space business.
The radar is designed to help air crews detect and track various types of air and see targets as well as perform aircraft control, air and surface surveillance, gunfire support, self-defense and target acquisition tasks.
