Julia Phillips, former acting vice president and chief technology officer of the Education Department‘s Sandia National Laboratories, has been appointed by President Barack Obama to the National Science Board.
She will lead efforts to maintain U.S.’ key role in the science and engineering fields in her new position, Sandia Labs said Wednesday.
Her 19-year career at Sandia Labs includes time as director of laboratory research strategy and partnerships, director of nuclear weapons science and technology and director of physical, chemical and nano sciences.
She previously served as a manager and member of the technical staff at AT&T‘s Bell Laboratories, where she studied epitaxial metallic and insulating films on semiconductors, high temperature superconducting, ferroelectric and magnetic oxide thin films and transparent conducting materials.
The National Science Foundation established the 25-member board to develop new policies intended to foster science and engineering research and education programs as well as offer advice to the U.S. president and Congress on science and education guidelines.
