SUNPOWER logoSunPower will construct a 10-megawatt photovoltaic solar power plant to generate 18,000 megawatt hours per year for the Redstone Arsenal U.S. Army post in Alabama under a 27-year renewable energy services agreement and lease.

The company said Friday that the Army has an option to purchase 100 percent of energy the Oasis power plant will generate under the power purchase agreement.

Richard Kidd, the Army’s energy and sustainability deputy assistant secretary, said the project will work to boost the amount of installed solar power in Alabama through the cooperation of the service branch, industry stakeholders, local officials, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other partners.

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates the plant will help offset the same amount of carbon emissions that 10,000 acres of forests can neutralize annually, the company said.

SunPower added the Army works to meet goals to derive 25 percent of its total energy consumed from renewable sources and deploy one gigawatt of renewable energy on its installations by 2025.
