The Army Research Laboratory has partnered with Drexel University in Pennsylvania to explore methods to detect structural fatigue and stress problems in military aerial vehicles.
ARL and the university also seeks to identify approaches to model the severity of aircraft material damage precursors as part of their cooperative research and development agreement, the U.S. Army said Friday.
“While many other projects will be spawned by this agreement, the initial project addresses our Sciences for Maneuver Campaign goals,” noted Dy Le, chief of the vehicle technology directorate within ARL’s mechanics division.
Le added the partnership also offers “new experiential learning opportunities for students and connects them to career opportunities within the Department of Defense.”
ARL says it has approximately 180 collaborative R&D projects with academic and commercial organizations.
