Chinook (1)Lockheed Martin has received a 12-year, $78.7 million contract from the U.K. defense ministry to design and develop a synthetic training system for the Chinook Mk6 helicopter crew of the Royal Air Force.

The company said Tuesday it will deploy simulators and virtual-reality technologies at a training facility at the RAF Odiham base to help Chinook pilots and crew experience various operational scenarios.

“We look forward to delivering a system that will help support the important role of the RAF’s Chinook fleet, and to continuing to support flying training across the U.K. military,” said Jim Weitzel, vice president of training solutions for Lockheed’s training and logistics solutions arm.

RAF Odiham will also offer classroom-based learning on the Chinook’s flight, emergency and mission functions, Lockheed added.

The company noted that up to 16 of its employees in the U.K. will provide maintenance and instruction support at the facility.
