Dr. Alfred Zinn, a principal research scientist at Lockheed Martin, has developed a nanoscale version of copper that he intends for use in circuit board manufacturing, the Silicon Valley Business Journal reported Monday.
Angela Swartz writes CuantumFuse is designed to be heated at 392 degrees Fahrenheit — lower than the average 500 degree temperature — in an effort to reduce damage to components and circuit boards.
“What we have achieved has been about to turn this copper into a form you can use and make all kinds of different shapes and doesn’t need a high temperature,â€Â Zinn said.
“Copper has much higher electrical connectivity (10-15 times higher) and resistance.â€
Lockheed has launched efforts to license CuantumFuse and is in the process of finding partners to further develop the patented technology, according to the report.
The company noted that it expects to incorporate the nanocopper material into LED lighting systems in less than two years.
