Huntington Ingalls Industries has launched its 10th amphibious transport dock during the ship’s christening ceremony.
The John P. Murtha landing platform will be added to the U.S. Navy‘s amphibious assault fleet, Huntington Ingalls said Saturday.
The ship’s sponsor is Donna Murtha, daughter of former U.S. lawmaker and Marine Corps officer John Murtha, after whom the ship was named.
Mike Petters, president and CEO of Huntington Ingalls, said the performance of previous LPDs delivered has bolstered the government’s confidence in the LPD program.
“This was most recently demonstrated by the Navy’s request and the congressional investment in the 12th San Antonio-class warship — and the Navy’s selection of this proven hull-form for its new LX(R) class of amphibious ships,†Petters added.
Huntington Ingalls has delivered nine ships in the San Antonio class of ships.
