Lockheed Martin has developed a smart grid technology with Dominion Resources that works to detect and map power outages remotely and support response planning by sending relevant data from the remote location.
Lockheed said Thursday VirtuGrid combines the company’s technology and Dominion’s distribution engineering experience to help energy and utility companies manage power distribution.
“VirtuGrid will help utilities map the connectivity of the electrical distribution grid,” said Roger Flanagan, director of energy services for Lockheed’s information systems and global solutions business.
The technology will send energy and voltage readings, phase and circuit connectivity, GPS location and other data from the source of disturbance in the grid, the company said.
Lockheed and Dominion launched VirtuGrid during the DistribuTECH conference this week.
