Lockheed Martin and Bayanat Airports Engineering & Supplies have completed the commissioning and installation of light detection and ranging systems at Dubai International Airport.
The WindTracer system works to measure the strength and behavior of wake vortices caused by arriving aircraft, Lockheed Martin said Tuesday.
The LIDAR systems are intended to help Dubai Air Navigation Services meet the growing aircraft traffic demands at the airport.
DANS operators will analyze the wake data from WindTracers to implement the concepts for reducing aircraft separations during arrivals and maintain safety at Dubai International Airport.
“WindTracer has been a major enabler for similar wake mitigation efforts in the U.S. and Europe, increasing aircraft throughput at many airports by up to 30 percent,†said Michael Margulis, director of WindTracer programs at Lockheed Martin.
Two of the three WindTracers now installed at the airport have been in operation since 2013.
