A new IBM study indicates a growing concern among security leaders over what they perceive as rising external threats.
The survey of chief information security officers and other leaders says 60 percent of respondents believe their organizations lack the necessary resources to engage in a cyber war, IBM said Tuesday.
Organizations see big data, cloud and mobile as critical components in responding to security issues, according to the survey.
IBM Center for Applied Insights polled 138Â security leaders and also found that 40 percent of respondents consider sophisticated external threats as their top challenge.
Brendan Hannigan, general manager of IBM Security, said CISOs need to use their influence in the boardroom to protect critical assets, focus investments on intelligence and hire top industry talent.
Nearly 50 percent of security leaders also say their organizations are deploying new security technology as the top focus area and added that their data leakage prevention, cloud security and mobile device security functions need improvement.
