NetApp has acquired Riverbed Technology‘s cloud-integrated backup product line for approximately $80 million in an effort to help clients manage data across cloud platforms.
NetApp will consolidate the SteelStore product with other cloud-integrated storage offerings for customers to back up their data in private and public cloud environments, NetApp said Monday.
NetApp plans to roll out the SteelStore product in the third quarter of the company’s 2015 fiscal year.
“The SteelStore product will expand our portfolio and support our customers’ hybrid cloud initiatives by integrating cloud storage as an option for backup and archiving their business data,” said Jonathan Kissane, senior vice president, chief strategy officer and general manager of NetApp’s cloud business.
Riverbed Technology designed SteelStore to help backup applications and cloud providers customize their data protection infrastructure services.
The product is designed as compatible with third-party storage infrastructures and third-party backup software.
SteelStore also features encryption and security standards to protect data as it moves between cloud platforms.
