Lockheed Martin has opened a new optical systems technology center in Palo Alto, California, that will house the company’s design teams and partners from industry and research universities who are collaborating on optical payload technologies.
“The Optical Payload Center of Excellence will benefit from the digital tapestry that links all stages of development, from initial concept and design to production and qualification,” Rick Ambrose, executive vice president of Lockheed’s space systems business, said Wednesday.
He noted that the center intends to leverage 3-D printing, virtual reality systems and other manufacturing and assembly technology as it delivers optical systems.
These support satellites, telescopes, energy lasers, ladar systems and other tools and applications, the company said.
The center is part of Lockheed’s research and development complex in Palo Alto.
