General Dynamics Electric Boat has delivered a new Virginia-class nuclear submarine to the U.S. Navy ahead of its commissioning in October as the first of eight vessels in the Block III group.
The North Dakota (SSN-784) attack submarine is the 11th ship of its class that Electric Boat has built with Huntington Ingalls Industries‘  Newport News Shipbuilding subsidiary, General Dynamics said Friday.
Kurt Hesch, Electric Boat vice president and Virginia-class program manager, said that the company held sea trials for the North Dakota to test the features of Block III.
Under the Design for Affordability program, Block III submarines feature a redesigned bow that includes a Large Aperture Bow array, 12 vertical-launch missile tubes and two Virginia payload tubes.
