centurylink-logoCenturyLink‘s data hosting segment has tapped ComEd to support an energy-efficiency project that aims to reduce the energy consumption of CenturyLink’s 125,000-square-foot Chicago CH2 data center by 7.4 million kilowatt hours.

In support of CenturyLink Technology Solutions‘ global green data center initiative, ComEd said Sunday it will implement its “Smart Ideas for Your Business” program that offers technical assistance and financial incentives to encourage sustainability practices.

“[We] are doing our part to ensure the long-term health of the environment, joining with consumers and businesses to promote and practice the intelligent use of resources,” said Joel Stone, vice president of global data center operations at CenturyLink Technology Solutions.

The company is targeting a lower power usage effectiveness at the CH2 data center by upgrading most of its mechanical equipment and using the incentives to work on its airflow, operating temperatures and cooling tower performance.

Other areas covered in the ComEd program are lighting fixtures, construction or renovation of facilities and energy savings for small businesses, ComEd said.
