Boeing has delivered a 14th P-A Poseidon airplane to U.S. Navy as the branch seeks to bolster its sea patrolling capabilities, the company said Wednesday.
The first Poseidon squadron deployed in Kadena, Japan last winter to carry out operational missions and a second squadron is scheduled to deploy later this summer, Boeing says.
Navy Commander Tony Rossi, P-8A deputy program manager, said the Navy plans to replace the old P-3 Orion fleets and fulfill its current contract for 53 of the multi-mission P-8A’s.
“We’re putting P-8A aircraft through their paces out in the field and appreciate all the reliability, capabilities and improvements the Poseidon brings to the table,” said Rossi.
“The next squadron is trained, ready to go and will begin conducting missions in the near future.”
The P-8A Poseidon is based on the Boeing 737-800 commercial airplane and is built to carry out anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare missions by using technology for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.
