Lockheed Martin and the U.S. Navy have demonstrated an Aegis combat system in a series of three tests for Standard Missile-6 long-range engagement.
The Baseline 9 air and missile defense system onboard the USS John Paul Jones worked to identify and destroy targets during the over-the-horizon tests, Lockheed Martin said Tuesday.
Jim Sheridan, director of Aegis U.S. Navy programs for Lockheed Martin, said the Naval Integrated Fire Control-Counter Air exercise applies to other systems in order to target distant missiles.
A non-Aegis system supplied data to detect targets during the first long-range mission exercise.
The second and third tests involved missiles targets at varying altitudes.
The NIFC-CA will undergo additional testing in 2014 before its deployment aboard the Theodore Roosevelt Battle Group in 2015.
