A General Dynamics subsidiary has signed a contract with Kinder Morgan Energy Partners‘ American Petroleum Tankers to design and build an additional 610-foot, 50,000-ton cargo vessel with a 330,000 barrel capacity.
General Dynamics NASSCO will construct the tanker at its shipyard in San Diego, California by the fourth quarter of 2015 for delivery in the second quarter of 2017, the company said Monday.
The vessel, which is the fifth order from APT, will again be designed by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering‘s DSEC subsidiary following the ECO MR tanker design with environmental protection and fuel efficiency features.
General Dynamics NASSCO said the tankers will be built to accommodate a possible future conversion to LNG fuel-gas system and Type C LNG tanks.
“NASSCO is very pleased to be continuing our partnership with American Petroleum Tankers by building a 5th ECO tanker,” said Kevin Graney, vice president and general manager of General Dynamics NASSCO.
