Arleigh Burke class destroyerA General Dynamics segment has won a $642.5 million U.S. Navy contract to build an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer which adds to a multi-year deal that includes two other DDG 51 destroyers and three Zumwalt-class destroyers already in production.

This new ship order brings the total General Dynamics Bath Iron Works contract value to an estimated $3.4 billion, the company said Monday.

The all-steel DDG 51 destroyer is equipped with gas turbine propulsion, an anti-submarine system and anti-aircraft, anti-ship and land-attack missiles.

According to General Dynamics, it supports carrier battle, surface action, amphibious and replenishment missions.

The two Arleigh Burke-class destroyers undergoing fabrication are scheduled for delivery in 2016 and 2017, while the first of the three Zumwalt-class destroyers is set for christening on April 12.
