An independent panel of experts has completed the critical design review on the spacecraft for the James Webb Space Telescope, which Northrop Grumman is building for NASA.
The review finished five months ahead of schedule and took place after 76 preceding reviews of the telescope’s spacecraft, Northrop announced Friday.
Northrop is building the spacecraft to point the telescope in a set direction and to stabilize images.
Webb will also be comprised of the telescope and a sunshield that works to separate the observatory to a warm sun-facing side and a cold anti-sun side to protect the mirrors from the sun and Earth’s heat.
In December 2013, Northrop delivered the mirrors to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
