L-3 CommL-3 Communications has won a contract to provide switchgear equipment for the power distribution and protection system of a future U.S. Navy submarine.

Work covers design, qualification and delivery of switchgear to the first submarine built to replace the military branch’s legacy Ohio-class platform, L-3 Communications said Friday.

L-3’s surge protection device electrical systems business has been assigned to perform the task and the company said follow-on deliveries could occur through 2035 if all submarines are built in the Navy’s current plan of record.

Christine Montalvo, president of L-3 SPD Electrical Systems, said the company’s electrical protection and distribution technology is designed for tough conditions and rugged environments.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-based L-3 SPDES operates as part of the power and propulsion systems sector within the electronic systems business segment and manufactures switchgear and air circuit breakers for the Virginia-class fast attack submarine.
