Littoral-Combat-ShipAirbus‘ defense and space business has entered into a contract with its electronics and border security affiliate to deliver naval radars for the U.S. Navy‘s Littoral Combat Ship program.

Airbus said Wednesday it will provide TRS-4D radars through Freedom-class prime contractor Lockheed Martin.

Mike Cosentino, president of Airbus’ defense and space segment, said TRS-4D is based on active electronically scanned array technology and designed to support LCS’ transition to a frigate.

LCS’ TRS-4D radar is a rotating version of the AESA fixed panel TRS-4D radar aboard the German navy’s F-125 class frigates, Airbus noted.

TRS-4D works to detect and track various air and sea targets and aid surveillance, target acquisition, self-defense, gunfire support and aircraft control, Airbus said.

The software-defined radar is designed to accommodate changes to match future threats over the ship’s service life.

Airbus has delivered three TRS-4D radars and eight AN/SPS-75 radars for the LCS program.
