BlackBerry has launched at this week’s O’Reilly Solid Conference in San Francisco its Project Ion series of initiatives to drive the Internet of Things by developing resources to extract insight from large amounts of data.
“Billions of connections, generating trillions of transactions and exabytes of data daily, will require platforms that can operate securely on a global scale,” John Chen, BlackBerry’s executive chairman and CEO, said Wednesday.
By creating a public application platform to manage data, an Internet of Things ecosystem of carriers and developers and partnerships between industry, academia and government, BlackBerry said it expects to empower businesses and organizations through informed decision-making.
According to a January 2014 Forrester Research report, the Internet of Things involves smart products collecting personal and contextual data to deliver personalized user experiences.
