Hughes Network Systems will provide an HX broadband satellite system and terminals for delivering satellite Internet services to the Colombian subsidiary of satellite operator HISPASAT.
The contract is part of the Vive Digital program, through which Colombia’s ministry of information technology and communication aims to increase Internet access in the country, Hughes said Tuesday.
“HISPASAT is helping Colombia make a technological leap through this important national initiative that will bring opportunity to the masses, and Hughes is proud to be the chosen technology provider,” said Hugo Frega, Hughes’ senior director of sales for Latin America.
Working as a consortium, HISPASAT and NEC Colombia will install and operate Hughes’ HX System on 650 Vive Digital kiosks in the country.
The $283.71 million Vive Digital program’s goal is to target 6,648 operational sites by August.
