The National Science Foundation has estimated a 1.1 percent decrease in university research spending for the 2012 fiscal year, the first decline it recorded since 1974, the Baltimore Sun reported Monday.
Scott Dance writes that university officials attributed the decline to budget cuts and the government’s withdrawal of the economic stimulus package.
Dance reports that universities logged a total spend of $66 billion in their research budgets for medicine, engineering and science during the period.
Johns Hopkins University spent $2 billion, a decrease of 1.8 percent, but still cinched the number one spot in research spending by university for the 34th year in a row.
