Artificial intelligence company Scale AI has launched the Defense Llama large language model, or LLM.
The San Francisco-based company said Tuesday that Defense Llama is designed to support national security initiatives. The new LLM, built on Meta’s Llama 3 architecture, is exclusively available in controlled U.S. government environments within Scale Donovan. Defense Llama is ready for deployment and can be integrated into multiple defense systems.
What Can Defense Llama Do?
Defense Llama is a specialized LLM that provides service members and national security professionals with the capabilities to leverage generative AI and safely use it for military planning, intelligence operations and assessing enemy weaknesses.
By utilizing fine-tuned data from its Data Engine, Scale AI has enabled the LLM to provide relevant answers to questions and assess possible scenarios. The answers mimic the writing style and tone of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
Scale AI, Meta Collaboration
Defense Llama stems from a collaboration between Scale AI, Meta and defense experts that sought to build an AI system using open-source LLM.
The new LLM was developed using a dataset that covers military doctrines, international humanitarian laws and other policies that adhere to the Department of Defense’s guidelines on armed conflict and AI ethics.
Alexandr Wang, CEO of Scale AI, stated, “With Defense Llama, our service members can now better harness generative AI to address their specific mission needs.”
David Wehner, chief strategy officer at Meta, added, “Our open-source Llama models have tremendous potential to support America’s safety and security and keep our country globally competitive.”
