A Thales subsidiary has received a contract from the Defense Innovation Unit to prototype a family of advanced standard batteries designed to simplify logistical and network operations.
Under the contract, Thales Defense & Security Inc. will utilize processes already employed to support the AN/PRC-148 radio family of batteries to manufacture hundreds of prototypes of the Small Tactical Universal Batteries by 2025, the company said Wednesday.
STUB batteries feature a common USB-C power delivery interface and incorporate higher-capacity NanoGraf cells, simplifying battery charging and reducing the need for various battery types across joint services inventories.
The STUB development effort is part of DIU’s FAStBat initiative and represents one of many efforts to expedite the adoption of commercial technology throughout the military.
