BAE Systems‘ research and development arm was tapped by the Office of Naval Research to create custom microelectronics for use on next-generation radar, electronic warfare and communication applications.
The company said Wednesday its FAST Labs organization received a $5 million contract from ONR for the development of advanced Gallium Nitride-based monolithic microwave integrated circuit and module electronics as part of the Common-architecture Amplifier for Low-cost, Efficient, SWaP-Constrained Environments or COALESCE program.
Commenting on the effort, Ben McMahon, technology development manager at BAE Systems’ FAST Labs, said, “The COALESCE program closes the gap between commercial electronics and customized electronics to meet the Department of Defense’s space and power requirements and enable next-generation solutions.”
The initiative seeks to equip the U.S. Navy with electronic warfare applications with longer range and better effectiveness by providing radio-frequency modules with high power and ultra-small form factor.
Work will be performed at BAE’s Microelectronics Center Foundry in Nashua, New Hampshire.
