The Department of Energy plans to invest as much as $150 million in research projects that will focus on exploring methods to reduce carbon emissions from energy systems and manufacturing processes.
DOE said Tuesday it will support studies that align with the objectives of the Energy Earthshots Initiative aimed at driving clean energy technology advancements, such as carbon capture and sequestration, within 10 years.
The department considers its new open funding opportunity an integral part of efforts to identify climate solutions and help the Biden administration meet its net-zero emission target for the country.
“Rapidly deploying existing climate technology while cranking up investments in early-stage climate research is the one-two punch we need to build long-term resilience to the climate crisis and meet our 2050 goals,” said Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm.
Total funds for the program are contingent on congressional appropriations and the potential allocation for fiscal year 2022 amount could reach $50 million.
