General Dynamics' mission systems business has introduced a software-defined radio offering designed to help military customers transmit data from ground locations to aerial platforms.
The URC-300 radio can work with multiple waveforms, support line-of-sign communications and operate with less interference from Wi-Fi transmitters, commercial FM broadcast towers or airfield channels, the company said Monday.
The system is designed with an intuitive keypad interface and can be operated with other URC-300 units without interference within a distance of 6.5 feet. Users can also control and monitor the device's front panel functions via the browser-based Web Maintainer tool.
Bill Ross, a GDMS vice president, said the company developed URC-300 with a flexible core framework similar to a smartphone to simplify waveform and feature technology insertion.
General Dynamics is scheduled to supply the new radios to the U.S. Air Force's radar, airfield and weather systems group at Kadena AF Base in Japan in February.
