Navatek has changed its name to Martin Defense Group in a move to emphasize the technology research and development service provider’s intention to support U.S. defense programs.

The rebranding effort comes after the Honolulu-based firm increased its workforce size by 60 percent over the past five months and expanded its operations across five states, including the establishment of a facility in South Carolina that houses engineers, scientists and interns, the company said Friday.

Martin Kao, CEO of Martin Defense, said the company aims to innovate with partners and transform emerging technology platforms into “game-changing” offerings designed to help customers ensure national security.

Chief Operating Officer Gary Ambrose noted that the firm is also interested in working with the academic sector to develop talent in the science, technology and engineering areas.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency selected Martin Defense, Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman in March to conduct unmanned underwater vehicle R&D efforts for DARPA’s Manta Ray program.
