Tom Wheeler, former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, has joined the board of directors of unmanned traffic management technology provider AirMap.
He will provide guidance to the AirMap leadership team on its efforts to increase safety of autonomous aircraft operations through the use of technology and compliance with government regulations, AirMap said Monday.
“I am honored to join the AirMap team,†said Wheeler. “Having spent my professional life at the intersection of new technology and policy, I am excited to be a part of this new challenge.â€
Wheeler’s telecommunications experience includes being the President of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association and the CEO of the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association prior to his appointment to the FCC in 2013.
He helped guide the commission in a period of technological innovation during his service from 2013 to 2017 under the Obama administration.
He also carries the distinction of being the only person to be in both the Wireless Hall of Fame and the Cable Television Hall of Fame.
