The Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity has launched an Electricity Industry Technology and Practices Innovation Challenge that seeks to transform current utility grid operations.

DOE said it may award a total of $1M to 25 winners that can deliver technologies intended to improve grid reliability, mitigate emerging threats, fortify system resilience and prevent interdependecies in fuel delivery infrastructure.

Participants must develop capabilities that can address key areas such as cyber and physical risk mitigation; safety; reliability and resiliency; operational efficiency; and capacity for emergency response and recovery.

The challenge is divided into two tiers, with the winning Tier 1 submission eligible to receive a $100K gold award and the Tier 2 winner qulified to secure a $25K grand prize.

Interested parties may register until April 26 and submit entries through April 30.

The DOE expects to announce the winners on Aug. 30.
